My Garden!

Okay, calling some plants on a balcony a garden is a bit of a stretch, but I’m proud of my babies.

I felt like I was playing Frostpunk in real life. Two major setbacks were:

  1. Frost in the spring and early summer at night. I had to bring the plants inside for the night for 3 weeks.

  2. I’ve been away for a few days and lack of water and sun has taken its toll on them. The striked-through plants are dead. :^(

I also bought some COB LEDs, CPU fans and made a grow light. Though I was not aware of the fact that you have to carefully measure the distance between the light and the plants. None of them burned but almost all of the plants that was under the light got very leggy, espacially basil. Also, didn’t do a good job of keeping the light on for 12 hours.

List of plants

Such a strong boy. Bought seeds and tooks some cuttings from a plant in the park. Germinating the seeds was a pain and most of the cuttings did not survive. Scarification didn’t work but stratification did wonders. But the ones that did are growing strong. They didn’t die when I was away for a few days and didn’t water them and somehow they thrived in the heatwave. A truly invasive species. :^)

Very easy to germinate and grow. They took a hit from the heatwave but I hope they’ll recover.

Slow germination, doesn’t like being crowded. All of the leaves are gone now but new ones are growing. If not watered regularly displays a very dramatic dying act, but recovers quickly.

Taxonomists pulled a quick one on us; rebranding a plant from Cockscomb to Love Lies Bleeding. :^) Very easy to germinate and grow. Grows really fast. Not a beautiful plant in my opinion. Resistant to heat.

Looked very dead when I returned from my trip. Half of them recovered, half of them didn’t. Looks pretty.

Died before I could even see the flowers.

Popcorn. Germinates very easily and grows fast. Needs adequate soil-depth, doesn’t seem to dislike being crowded. When potted in a small container, needs more watering than other plants.

Classic old beans. My girlfriend brought 4 unknown varieties from her parents’ garden. Average crowd enjoyer, fast germinator. Something about my water or soil made their leaves damaged. Most of them grew some beans, but they were very small and not tasty. I’ll try again next year.

Slow germinator, slow grower. I think my soil choice was not the best for this one. Grew really short but flowers were pretty and attracted a lot of bees.

Grew really tall. I think I should have cut the top off to make it branch out. Smelled really nice and was tasty.

Easy to germinate, slow grower. Sadly, succumbed to a bug infestation. Was very promising but the same problem with beans; damaged leaves.

Got some flax-seeds laying around and decided to give it a go. Germinated easily, grew fast. Shallow pot was a mistake. Grew tall, didn’t mind being crowded. Flowers were pretty but small. Very soft to touch. :^)

 Couldn’t germinate.

Really wanted to grow these, bought 2 pack of seeds at different times. None of them germinated.

Bought violet Violet seeds specifically for my girlfriend because she likes violet and purple. Was growing really well but dropped from the balcony. Murphy, you bastard.
